Most photography businesses don't fail because the work wasn't good enough. They stall because of unclear pricing, missing contracts, and no real system for bookings and invoicing.

What's actually regulated — and what isn't

Photography itself isn't a licensed profession in Canada. Most freelance photographers operate as sole proprietors with no special provincial licence required. What does apply almost everywhere is a general municipal business licence for any self-employed service, plus registering a business name if you're operating under anything other than your own legal name.

The insurance most photographers skip until it's too late

A standard home insurance policy typically excludes or caps business-use camera equipment — dedicated equipment insurance covers theft, damage, and loss, including in transit to a shoot. General liability matters too, and many venues won't let you shoot on-site without proof of it. For irreplaceable one-time events like weddings, professional liability (errors & omissions) covers claims tied to lost files or delivery delays that can't simply be reshot.

The pricing gap that quietly costs the most

Editing and culling routinely take longer than the shoot itself, yet it's the part most new photographers forget to price in. Build package tiers rather than quoting every job from scratch, and be explicit in every quote about usage rights — personal use, commercial use, and exclusivity are all priced differently.
